I am a little confused as to the differences of the rear sight apertures. I have read different posts that contradict one another, what is the skinny on the rear sight configuration small vs large.

When do you flip from the small to the large?

Does doing this change your elevation settings?

The large is the night sight the small is the day sight. Anyone who says anything different then that is a complete idiot and should consider suicide.

oh and if your wondering on how to change you elevation setting its the knob on the left hand side of the carrying handle just left of the rear sight aperature. For the M16 its 8/3 for 25 meters then for 30 meters its 8/3 plus one. For the AR i think its the same thing except it's like a 6 instead of an 8

Forgot to say thats just for quick elevation setting change, if your looking to zerio your weapon don't use that knob use the front sight post it can be raised or lowered by turning it.

Large is faster and gives more FOV.  It works better in low light but thats secondary to the precision you get from the small aperature.  In a standard non same plane rear aperature the large aperature id the close range apreature and the small aperature long range.  However if you wanted to shoot for groups a smaller aperature makes this easier at any range.

On an A2 sight, as I recall, the small and large apertures are not on the same plane (i.e., there is a slight point of aim change when the sight is flipped).  On the A1 sight, the only difference is the size of the hole.  Or, maybe I have that backwards.

Well, on the A1, the small apurature was marked "L" for long range.  I think they are BOTH set up with the small apurature being the long range optic. The direction of flip changed switching to the A2, and the large apurature on the A2 models are marked "0-2" if I recall correctly.

large hole, close range, better speed.

small hole, long range, able to concentrate on front sight post better.

Did you get that book from Elite team fighting? because in the army we only shoot to 300 meters and we ALWAYS use the small sight aperture unless its night or we have our gas masks on then we use the large sight aperture. So either you are the idiot using a book with false info or every NCO I've ever worked with in the army is wrong. Do what you guys want I'm sticking with my military training my lowest qual score so far was 36/40 so i got to be doing something right.

Just because the Army isn't using a weapon to it's full and intended potential, makes their procedures right.

Sorry, that is how I trained too.  You used the small apurature to zero, since with the fun adjustments it made the ballistics right, but other than that, the large aperature was to be used under 300 meters.  I can not comment how you were trained, but when I became an NCO myself, I taught out of the book, just like I was.

I got mine from the Marine Corps and we use to teach that same things, however with almost 5 years of constant war vice a few contingency operations we stopped.  It is a 0-200 sight, it also the default sight for shooting the boxer stance with a A4/A2 stock for anything other than the KD course because the small aperture becomes to small if you don't blade yourself.
