| I have a removable carry handle on my m4. Small aperature zeroed from the bench so that at 50 yards all shots either are touching or darn close. when I shoot from the standing position all my shots are considerably low. Of course not nearly as tight in grouping, but all consistantly low. Same goes for when I shoot prone. What is going on? |

If the handguard is not freefloated, the position of the support for the handguard will have a definate impact on your point of impact.
ie: support closest to the barrell nut, POI will be down as the barrell is "sorta hanging" from the barrell nut, this would probably simulate shooting offhand. support closest to the muzzle, POI will be higher, similar to what the support position might be in a rest putting more upwards pressure on the muzzle end. I doupt if there is any real movement on the barrell from the different support positions but moreso just the effect of vibrations/barrell whip and other dynamics of the bullet going through the barrell. Here's a link to an experiment I did awhile back:handguard influence on shot placements and case marks??? . My opinion: Free Float Matters!! |
