Is the only and main issue that people have with the EOTECH 511 unit is the battery?? I like the compact size, and can live with the battery issues.

Buy the 517.  It has a 7mm rise to get the dot over the front sight (assuming you have a front iron sight).

No comment from me; I love my EO 517.  Now, I would go for the 512 over the 511, because I like the idea of AA batteries instead of N batteries.  Easier to find, cheaper.  I also like my 7mm raised base, but you already said you wanted it low. no n/m.  The other thing I like about my 517 is that the power buttons are on the side.  That is the only consideration for you.

Although; if you are buying a 511 or 512, make sure they are revision F or G.  Left side of the optic, there should be a little letter printed at the bottom at the rear.  Pre- Revision F models had serious battery/ Quality control issues.  If it has an F or G, I would trust it.

The 511 is the worst EOTech of the line so there's a reason why they are discontinuing that model. The battery life is dreadful and that model is known to suck battery life, even when the sight is off.

Hopefully, the new XPS series will provide the same compactness and it'll be more rugged and reliable to boot.

So the 551 is the same size as the 511. Is it any better or does it have the same issues as the 511??

I have a 511 Rev. F, bought and mounted in 2006 and used periodically (for a total of about 1,500 rounds on six or seven outings).  It still has the original batteries and works great.

Had one and wished I never sold it. battery life was just fine, not as good as an Aimpoint. They discontinued it because of greed. Why sell something cheap when you can charge alot more for the same thing with a metal shroud. Their new model is smaller and close to $700.

I don't see it that way and I'm a huge EOTech fan and user (557 series).  If you were put all the EOTech models on a line scale, the 511/551 models sat at the end as far as reliability and battery life. Yes, their compactness is nice but there were significant drawbacks and they are right to phase out those models.  Whether the XPS series warrants their new pricing structure is a different story.
