How high do rings need to be in order to be the right height?  IE low rings on a bolt action rifle?   1"? 1.5"?  Best affordable scope mount for a flat top varminter?  Rather stay under $100.

1.40 inches above the rail will put the centerline of the optic at the same height as the iron sights on an AR.  This is not to say that another height might not work for an individual, but that height will work for most, and I believe is considered the "standard" mounting height, if there is one.

The various manufacturers call them different things––super high, ultra high, etc., and they define them differently.  Leupold defines their mount height from the top of the rail to the centerline of the optic.  Burris defines theirs from the top of the rail to the bottom of the lower ring, so the radius of the optic has to be added in to get the true height.

Added:  for an optic mounted at this height, the front iron sight, if there is one will be theoretically in the middle of the optic field of view, but at magnifications greater than 3X, the front sight will be invisible through the optic.

Leupold super high 1.40" Mk IV steel rings are about $130.  The Larue Lt-104 cantalevered mount which is very popular is $195.  With a little searching, you can probably find quality rings or a mount for less than $100, but don't know of a specific example.

skipsan's got the scoop on rings.  There are some affordable AR height rings, but not many - most inexpensive rings are for traditional rifles.

Decent, inexpensive rings that are high enough for an AR are Burris XTR (extreme) x-high ($50), Warne AR15 rings ($45), Millett AL00722 AR15 rings ($25), and Millett Tactical High ($45). The Millett Tactical and Burris XTR are similar extra-wide rings. The Millett AL angle-loc rings are windage adjustable, which some people like, but I hate, as you can lose zero easily when removing and re-installing the rings. I loc-tited one side of my angle-locs to keep it from shifting.
