I know how much all of you guys hate Aimpoint v. Eotech debates on here since they pop up 27 times a day, but I have a question about magnifying them. I recently acquired a DPMS AR-15 A3 and am having trouble deciding what kind of optics would fit me best. Mainly this gun would be used for plinking and some varmint hunting at the ranch, but I also want it set up mainly as a CQB weapon just in case there was ever a situation that it might be useful. I want to have the advantages of a true CQB sight but would also like to have some magnification for longer distances shots and target acquisition. I have read a little about this on here, but have not heard enough to really help me make up my mind. Despite several shortcomings, I want to put an Eotech 517 sight on my AR. My question is how good does the 3X magnifiers work with the Eotechs? Also, I know that I like the Eotech better than the Aimpoint as far as the sights themselves go, but in tandem with the 3X magnifier does one of them tend to work better than the other?

Thanks for any help that you can give me on this. I apologize if this question is anywhere else, I searched and also just scrolled through the board to find information but could not find much.

I can't speak for the Aimpoint setup, but the 3X magnifier for Eotech works good. But for your use, I think you would be better suited with a 1-4 scope, since your doing some hunting with it.

I have both setups and I usually take the 1-4 to the woods, and I have no problem with close targets, both eyes open shooting.

Just speculation on my part, but wouldn't the brighter sight picture of the Eotech work better with a magnified optic?

A magnifier is not something you would use for CQB work but they are nice to have in the field.  As for the magnifier I like the EoTech.
