I got the ACOG TA01 mounted on the carry handle of an AR 15.  It was literally about 5 feet high when first sighting in at the range.  The customer service rep at Trijicon said this was a recurring problem with factory bushmaster carry handles because they are not mil-spec.  I decided to order the picitanny rail adapter, part #TA51, decrease weight, and just give it a try.  The service rep said that the TA01 would lose accuracy at 400-500 yards, as it was designed for mount on the carry handle.  I may shoot out to 400 but not likely.

I really want to make the TA01 work without getting another optic.  Is it possible?  Of course, accuracy is inherently essential.  Any input or insight on the realistic loss of accuracy.  I mean, I move from load to load, surplus, factory, reloads, etc., so I never really develop a real accurate load that groups consistently.  Maybe one day.

Bottom line, Is this the wrong optic to be mounted on the flattop or will it work great?

And as always, thanks for the feedback, It really helps out.

Remember the ACOG isn't designed for pure precision accuracy.  With practice, expect to be able to hit a man sized target out to 4-600 yards, but don't expect nice groups.

Don't worry one bit. Mount it on your flat top. A troy BUIS will fold neatly under it using the Trijicon TA51 mount. Or use other options. But DON'T fret the BDC differences.
I've had a TA01 mounted thusly for 8+ years on a Bushmaster 16" and now a Noveske N4 Recce 16" and the BDC has been very close at 300 and 600 when I've had the opportunity to use it thusly. So close that I'd never know the difference.

+1  Agree with above.  If you want a nice neat group then get a leupold target scope.  ACOG is not designed for this type of shooting so do not expect it.  If you ever need to engage and hit a man size target under any weather, then ACOG is your optic.
Rethink what your criteria is.

It is a 16" carbine

When customer service told you it would lose "accuracy" they meant the BDC would be slightly off.  I wouldn't worry about it, it will work just fine with any flat top mount.

You're good to go.

From the link: For a Flattop 16" firing M193:
Sight in at 100 per your manual. You'll be a half-inch high at 300, dead on at all other ranges until 500. At 500, the M193 starts losing juice fast on this trajectory, you'll be 2" low at 500 and 9" low by 600.

If you end up in some post apocalyptic "I am Legend" doomsday scenario, and need to take the occasional ultra long range shot, 24" low at 700 and 32" low at 800 is the ballpark continuation of the above trajectory plot.
