I have a RRA A2 with a railed hand guard.  I've thought about putting Leupold 2x EER scope on the hand guard to co-witness with the iron sights.  Does this sound like a good thing to do and if so what height rings do you think I'd need?

I'm a newbie when it comes to scopes.

Thanks,
Paul

I've been convinced by postings on this forum that you can't co-wittness a magnifying optic with iron sights.  Co-wittnessing works with 1X magnifcation only--or so the real experts report.  Someone will be along to either shoot that down or confirm.

That being said, iron sights are 1.4" above the rail. For an optic to be on the same line-of-sight as the irons, the mounts would have to place the scope centerline at 1.4" above the rail for an absolute co-wittness. The ring manufacturers designate these rings as "ultra high", or "super high" or whatever.  They also define their heights differently--Leupold defines their scope height as the the distance from the rail to the centerline of the mount.  Burris on the other hand, defines their scope height from the rail to the bottom of the lower ring.  You have to add the radius of the scope to get the total height to the C/L of the optic.

I see your point on magnification vs. 1x in a cowitness - that makes sense.
