Okay so I just got my aimpoint flip caps in the mail today. I got them because the bikini cover is annoying to put on and off. I installed the rear cap no problem, went on like a charm. The front flip cap was damned near impossible to get on (I actually had to trim it a bit with a razorblade to get it to go on). Now I have a problem: The battery compartment cannot be opened while the front lens cover is in place. I'm also 99% certain that the front lens cover won't come off short of cutting it.

So, does anyone actually use flip covers on their comp M4's? If so what brand and what do you do when you want to remove it?

Do the M2/M3 size flip caps fit the M4/M4s as well?

Got mine from midway. Supposedly they're one-size fits all for the non magnified 30mm objective style optics.

ETA: They're branded "aimpoint" though they came in simple zip-lock bags.

Aimpoint formerly used a COTS lens cap.
There were a lot of problems w/ durability. They were easy to put on, and off.
Too easy...
They now use a proprietary lens cover.

They are difficult to but on, especially the objective lens cover.

However, they do not need to be cut or otherwise damaged.
There is a lip on the cover that slides over a groove in the body of the tube.
Use a non petroleum lube and some patience and it will go on, and not come off of its own volition.

FYI, the Army specified the bikini cover due to issues with the older, COTS lens covers.

So I take it people don't worry about servicing the battery compartment and just leave the flip cap on there. I'm guessing that military usage wears out the optic before the battery dies

Dead- Battery life is 8 years....
Understand that some batteries may be of lesser quality and therefore not give the full measure of power

I just tried one of mine and can access the battery cap. It is tight, but OK.
However, if not, just remove the lens cap, replace your battery in 2016 and drive on.
