I'm going to put a Night Vision Monocular on my AR with either an Aimpoint or an Eotech. I might get an Aimpoint 3X magnifier as well someday... I'm looking at the GG&G scout extended rail. It mounts on top of the standard rail on the AR15 upper and extends forward, OVER the standard handguards a few inches. I know NOTHING about extended rails, except that I've seen these on the GG&G internet website. So my question is whether this would be a good idea to put the NV and a red dot sight and possibly a 3X magnifier, all together on a rail? It can be taken off with the two throw levers, so it looks real easy to take it off for both cleaning and for swapping out to a different optic occasionally on this same rifle. I do not have a free floated rail style forearm, so if the 3X is in the picture, it won't all fit on the stock upper rail. Thanks for the advice in advance, Jerry. |

Yes, you can mount optics on extended rails. If they're snugged down tight, they're just as solid as the flat top upper. The problem with them is they raise the optics (usually by 0.5", but some are different heights). If the gear is already set up with the correct height mounts for an AR, they'll be too high for a good cheek weld for many people once they're on the rail. The other problem with some rails is that they don't leave room for a BUIS, which needs to go directly on the flat top rail. Some extended rails have a BUIS built in, like the ARMS 38EX, but it's got the ARMS 40 style, which is very tall and can get in the way of the other optics. Others leave room behind for the BUIS, but different BUIS need different amounts of room. Another option is to put an Aimpoint on a cantilever mount, which gets it out ahead of the flat top, leaving more room for your other gear. There are who run this type setup - you might want to post with a subject like "How to mount Aimpoint, magnifier, and NV at the same time?". |
