Please excuse my noobie Q. I've just bought an AR15 from Superior Arms. I want to get soem kind of red dot type sight, but not sure which to get. There's been a lot of posts here about EOTech type, or Aimpoint types. I can only go back in the serch for like 7 days for some reason, so please excuse my ignorance in this area.

I dont want to spend alot of money. I will shoot the gun every so often, on the range, outdoors for target shooting, but not on a weekly basis. However, I would liek ot have some kind of red dot sight.

The question is, which is low cost, yet provides a red dot for my type of use? Something with a scope would be nice for distance shooting, but I also like being able to quickly sight in a target at relativly close ranges too, liek the EOTechs do.

I want to but one product, not 2 or 3. I was set on an EOTech type but others have said get an Aimpoint, you can add a multiplier and use it like a scope. Is that piece separate mounted scope or a simple lens that attaches to the Aimpoint?

Soo many models and types this is getting confusing.

Thanks in advance for understanding a noobie.

Probably better to post in the Optics forum.

First off, what's "not spending too much"? If your limit is $200, you have a lot fewer options than you do at $400.

Secondly, if you want an optic that can be used both for quick acquisition at close range AND accurate long-distance shooting, you're either looking at two optics or an expensive one like an ACOG.

-An EOtech will run you about $400. You can get within a minute-of-dead at 100 yards (I've plucked watermelons at that range) but for much more than that, you'd need to invest in a magnifier, which IS a separate pieces and WILL cost a couple hundred more.

-Same deal with the Aimpoint. It's about $500 for a Micro, $500-700 plus a couple hundred more for a mounted one. Good to about 100 yards for "tactical" shooting. You can again get magnifiers but they're extra money.

There are cheaper alternatives for red-dot sights. I have a Burris Fastfire mounted to my Cx4 Storm, or you could get a Trijicon RedDot or Dokter (sp?) sight. It's just a little window that projects a relatively parallax-free red dot. These can be had for $200 or so. They're NOT as good as the EOtech and Aimpoint and I wouldn't use them for distance shooting or magnification. However they are pretty much on at closer ranges.

A -scope- is better for distance shooting, but won't be as good for tactical engagement.

you definitely need to read the optics forum, you could read for days on all the info that's posted their...filled with lots of opinions but also a lot of technical data that will help you make your decision.

I went with an EO Tech for my M-4

Look for the S.P.O.T.  it's a reasonably well made 30mm red-dot from Korea.  We had one member here torture test the thing and he broke his rifle before he broke the sight.  (If you pony up the $24 for a membership you can find his test in the Archives...).

The SPOT goes for $149 and includes the mount.  However, if you prefer a different mount the SPOT can use any Aimpoint compatible mount, personally for an inexensive mount for this sight I like the Aimpoint QRP:

This is a SPOT in a QRP mount:

Thanks for the replies. Sorry, I did nt scroll down far enough to see the Optics forum, my bad. If an admin can move this post there, it's appreciated.

I am looking to spend around $200 or so. Maybe even $250-$300 for a Bushnell holosight or eBay EOTech. lolI was thinking of the 512 rev F that everyone seems to mention to look for.

The SPOT looks liek a good choice, biut I'll have to research it a bit to see the good/bads and choices for log range shooting.

If an EOTech type is good for accurate shooting upto around 100 yards, that maybe good enough for me.

The SPOT is functionally the same as an Aimpoint.  Though in general - even with the magnifiers Red-Dots are bad at long range shooting.  (IMHO 'long range' isn't till you get to 500y - at 100y you're still in 'short range')

EOTechs are fine to 100y - I've got 2 of them and have run them much further.  They cost more, but are built tougher and the batteries last longer than the SPOT.

However, if you want to print nice small groups on paper, what you really want is a magnified optic like a 3x9x40 scope.

Might as well spend $$ one time and get a quality product.  I would get a Bushnell Holo Sight as a bare minimum.

If you can swing a few more $$, get an EoTec or Aimpoint.  EoTec vs Aimpoint is a beat down horse, get either one as they are both excellent sights.

Just read the Optic forum

there been recalls on 553
crooked mounted eotechs
Battery Drain
Crooked reticle
Some are Water proof only 10 feet
Pat Rogers has seen them Fall of during class
Has over 10 screws all over it
made of plastic

Hell mine went down 3 times and will only work proper with Dura Cell N batts

Aimpoint is just a better optic

Now if its going to be used Only at a range then go for a EOTECK

I wouldnt put my life on the line with a eotech
But thats just Me

Check out the SPECS YOURSELF BETWEEN AIMPOINT AND EOTECH
