| I did a search and didn't turn up anything. What's the general rule of thumb for magnification and ranges? Seems like 3x is common for 100 yards. What level of magnification is recommended for your best chance at tight groups in a varmint hunting and long range target scenario at 100, 200, 300, 400+ yards? |

it really depends on the quality of the glass along with a fine crosshair reticle or say 1/8" target dot. I have a few scopes for low light shooting with heavy duplex reticles and the crosshairs cover a 1 inch area at 100 yards. There great for hunting, not so great for precision shooting. you'll probably be in at least 16 power in a quality scope for the 400 yard shooting you want to do. |

It depends on the diameter of your target. I know this is over simplified, but if you have a red dot, or iron sights, see how far away you can get before you wish you had magnification. Then times that distance by the magnification amount, and that is the distance you will be able to shoot with the magnification and the same view you saw at the closer range with no magnification. Of course this simplified approach assumes very good glass. 1000 yards seems like 100 yards with a 10x magnification, so shooting a man sized target at 100 yards would be very similar to shooting a man sized target at 1000 yards with 10x, ignoring all the other exterior ballistics factors that will obviously make the longer shot much more difficult. |
