I'm looking into upgrading from an aimpoint m2 to something with some magnification. I'll probably go with some sort of 4x acog, trouble is I'm a little uneducated on the variations so here's a few questions. Is there some sort of reason why you would choose one color reticle over another? Are the iron sights on a tao1nsn of any real use at all? Whats the difference between a nsn and a rco? Thanks for any input.

Some say red is easier for the eye to pick up, some say amber.  I think it's all dependent upon the individual.  Get what works best for you.

The NSN irons IMO are somewhat useless.  They are better than nothing, but I don't use mine.  I have a TRD ready to go on my NSN as soon as the mount shows up as I think it is a MUCH better CQB sighting solution.

I think the RCO is basically a TA31F with windage type stadia lines.  I'm not sure of the purpose, but I'm sure someone will chime in.  The NSN does NOT have fiber illumination like the RCO.  The NSN has cross hairs and the RCO has a chevron reticle.  That should pretty much sum it up between the two.

Before we get to NSN vs RCO, the difference between any TA01 and any other ACOG is that the TA01 is just a very durable scope with some tritium in the reticle for when it gets dark.  All of the other ACOGs have a fiber optic tube on the top that pulls in ambient light and makes the reticle bright enough to see in bright daylight.  Bright enough that you can keep both eyes open and use it kinda like an Aimpoint.  They refer to this as BAC, or Bindon Aiming Concept.

Beyond that, I'll say what I said in another post earlier today.  You really do need to find some in a gunshop to handle and look through so that you can get a feel for how the different models work.  The difference in eye relief for the 3.5x TA11 and the 4x TA31 can make one or the other much easier to for different people.  And then there's all of the compact ACOGs.
