I have been acquiring toys faster than optics to go with them so I think it may be time to even things out a bit.  I am contemplating an ACOG but am a little perplexed by all of the different models.  What's your guidance on magnification and reticle choice (and model number if you have it handy)?  This would go on a 5.56 caliber 16" barrel rifle.  Up close and quick would be nice but I would also like some improved ability for longer  shots (hell, for the price I would like it to clean my rifle when I am done shooting too).

Lastly, if you know a place with good prices on these I would be happy to hear about that too.

No buzz from the bee hive?  Okay...how about some guidance on which magnification I should be looking at (1.5x, 2x, 3x, 3.5x, 4x)?

I've only used the TA01NSN and the TA31F, of which I prefer the TA31F because of the BAC and ability to keep both eyes open.

check out the reticle pics thread and the SDMR course threads...they may help...
the retical picture thread is great...how far are you going to be shooting, is the main answer I would say....

I like them all (at least the 5 or so I have had/tried) but my favorite (I think) is the TA33, amber.

I have a TA45-6 (Amber Dot 1.5x24) It is a very nice sight, i wouldn't mind a 2x trijicon with a red cheveron. I noticed that the newer sights don't include the bible verse on the scope, i thought it was a pretty interesting thing, mine had John 1:7

"But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin"

Thanks for the replies.  I am leaning towards the TA33-8.  I am all sorts of color blind and the red chevron on my buddy's 5.5x is really difficult for me to pick up.  Based upon that and some pics from the reticle thread I am thinking that I would be better off with an amber reticle (which unfortunately seems to limit my choices substantially).  Another candidates would be TA31F-A.  Of course, no local dealers have these models in stock to go look through.  From a magnification perspective, I am loooking for guidance on the appropriate balance between low and high magnification.  I don't have much ACOG experience so I am hoping to get some info on the "tipping point" where magnification gets too much to be useful for close up quick shots.  This represents a substantial purchase for me so I appreciate the education from you all.

I like my TA31F, 4X red chevron reticle. The TA33 would have been my second choice.

Do you find that the 4x still works OK for close up work?

TA31 donut.

However I'd still like to try TA31F or new mini acog's chevron reticule but I had no chance to.

Depends how close up you mean. Under 50' it is still possible to use it, though it isn't extremely fast and is a bit difficult.

TA31RCO-M4CP is what I have. My second choice would be a TA31 "Doughnut of Death".

Any of the TA31's.

The BAC lets you use it at close range when you use both eyes open like a red dot sight. It works pretty good up close, but it really kicks ass at medium-long ranges.

This target is pretty close

BAC takes practice to learn and retain, it's rather perishable.  With an ACOG detached from the rifle, practice by walking around the house and backyard, key is you should be moving while practicing the use of BAC, or track a moving car while you're standing still.

The TA31DOC has a brightly lit TA01NSN-like reticle, with a Docter sight on top which you can use as a backup or CQB sight.

My vote goes to TA31DOC or TA31ECOS.

EOTech.

I sold my ACOG 1.5x for an EOTech and haven't looked back.  I just wasn't able to get it to work well with both eyes open (kept is about a year).  Since it was only 1.5x, I don't miss the magnification.

I didn't know what I was missing until I borrowed a friend's AR with an EOTech.  IMHO, target acquisition (rabbits) is so much faster with the EOTech.

In my little bit of experience with the ACOG's, I've found the longer eye relief to be very useful.  So, I prefer the TA-11 over the TA-01.  The target acquisition time of the TA-11 with the red donut seems far superior over the TA-01, however, if magnification is not needed, and target acquisition is your only concern, the eotech beats both ACOGs.

I guess my favorite is the TA11C, but not by much over the massive TA55A.  It's just that the TA55A is one of those scopes you don't fully appreciate until you use it in low light.

I have the TAO1NSN and the TA31RCO-M4.

I like the TA31 better; its just quicker to me.  I learned to use it close up pretty quickly and do fairly well with it at close ranges.  Not as fast as an EOTech or AimPoint but its easy to use and more effective than I thought it would be close up.

Both are excellent scopes and are rock solid.  Can't go wrong with just about any ACOG.
