I am getting ready to order my upper for my first AR build. I know that I eventually want to put a variable power scope on it. Probably a Leupold or Trijicon. I also really like the SARS setup up with the RDPM II. So, this is what Im shooting for later on. But for now I am trying to decide on steel sights. Should I go with a detachable carry handle? Rear Flip up BUIS? Also, on the front sights, If I just stick with the tower, will it interfere with my sight picture throught the scope? If so I will go with flip up rear sights as well. Thanks in advance for input. |

I'd go with the ARMS #40 flip up BUIS. It's relativel inexpensive and will do what you want it to. Check the EE for a gently used one. As for the scope, most non-powered scopes.. i.e Aimpoint, Eotech will co-witness.. if you're going with a full tube then you might want to consider cutting down the FSB or replacing it with a flip up front sight. You can probably just get higher rings but that would look kinda funny IMO.

1. No carry handle. 2. Aimpoint ML3 (2MOA) 3. buy and shoot some ammo That's it. Next time you have some money, buy a Magpul CTR stock and buy and shoot more ammo. Next, if looking through the front sight hasn't bothered you too much, get the ARMS 40L (low profile rear flip up) for a little over $100 and you've got your BUIS. Finally (there is never any finally with these things), get a Colt-type side sling swivel for the front gas block and 2-sling from Jason at www.gearsector.com. Buy and shoot more ammo...and that's all you'll ever need... ![]() |

Don't worry about the front sight - most people never notice it with a magnified scope. I'd go for a flip-up BUIS instead of a carry handle. For a rear BUIS, you need to decide what's important to you, and how high your scope mount and eyepiece combo will be. The ARMS 40 is pretty tall. The 40L is lower, but deploys with the small aperture active, which some people don't like. If it's for range use, plinking, etc, that won't matter much. The Troy is a good combo of sturdy, low height, large aperture deployed, locks in the up position features. They're the standard these days, but are a bit pricey. A few things to consider when choosing rear flip-up BUIS, depending on if it's going to be a range gun or a SHTF gun: - Will it be used for precision or long-range shooting? A small aperture is helpful for this. If the use is both close-up and long-range, a dual-aperture sight is useful. - If it's multi-aperture, which one is deployed when it flips? Some flip with the large aperture deployed, others with the small. - If multi-aperture, do the apertures deploy in the same plane? Some deploy with an elevation shift to account for the range differences, others use the same zero for both apertures. - Do you want the windage knob easy to adjust or shielded to prevent accidental adjustments? ARMS are exposed and easy, Troy is shielded. - Does it have elevation adjustments? Some do (like the Wilson Combat), most don't. - How easy is it to deploy or adjust if your hands are muddy or gloved? - Does it latch in the up position, the down position, or both? - How protected is it from damage, both down and deployed? The Matech is one that sticks up with little protection and can easily be tweaked or broken by rough handling when deployed. - How robust is the detent mechanism? The Matech will wear over time and become easier to deploy (and eventually won't lock). For many, this doesn't matter, as their BUIS aren't used often. Figure out which of these are important to you and what capabilities you want, and it will narrow down the choices quite a lot. |
| Thanks guys. Probably wont use the BUIS that much. Like I said gonna put a scope on there with a Larue mount for quick removal if I need the BUIS. I want steel sights simply because I want this gun to do it all. Close range and Long range, which is why I really like the SARS mount for a red dot sight on top of the scope. Gonna use it for plinking and coyote hunting. I think I am gonna go with the flip up front sights as well as the rear sights. Thinking about going with YHM for both of these. |
wish i could use the YHM or the GGG (very similar) but I have a .625 |
