What really is a "mil" or "moa"?

There's a lot of confusion on "mils" and "moa". That's why I wrote a paper on the subject.

For American shooters, our scopes, made by the major tactical scope manufacturers (i.e. Leupold, Nightforce, Schmidt & Bender, U.S. Optics, S.W.F.A, Bushnell Optics etc...) are only calibrated in the real mathematical "milliradians" that are based on 6283.2 mils in a circle and NOT based on the "artillery" mil of 6400 mils.

I also talk about "true" moa vs "shooters" moa, as well as discuss and derive the distance equations for both mils and moa.

Because I couldn't find a one source document on all these, I wrote a paper that discusses mathematically all these things and more. It is a revision of one that I did last year but this time I incorporated "shooters" moa. Plus I derived all the distance equations. I also cleaned it up a bit.

Plus the last page has a Quick Reference Chart.

It's meant to be a one source document for any questions you might have and the whole thing doesn't have to be read front to back.

I'm not good at making web pages, so the best I could do is the link below (the web site doesn't accept hot links), so you have to cut and paste. Any suggestions on how I could post this on-line at a better place would be appreciated. Bags

Link (unfortunately the site doesn't accept hot links so you have to cut and paste the link. Sorry).

This is an excellant post (the link) and a must-read for anyone serious about accurate shooting and doesn't already know the terminology.

Wow! That worked. Thanks. I'm looking for a better website to post it on.This is the best I could do for now giving my limited web-site building skills.

I cannot pull up the web page from the link.  Can you e-mail me a copy?  I’m interested in what you have to say.

Thanks for your time,

I couldn't get the link to work either--had to cut and past the web address from the original posting.  Worked fine.

I just downloaded it to print & read later.  Thanks for doing this, I look forward to the education.  I've always known the basics, but a little more mathmatical history and seeing everything laid out as you've done would be very entertaining.  I quickly scrolled through it, looks like it'll be a good read.
