Hope I'm doing this right. I've seen a lot of flat-tops that retain the normal front ramp sight. The question is: how is it that a scope can be mounted on the flat top receiver without visual interferance with the front sight and a medium to low scope ring configuration? In Iraq some units used a lot of those EOTECH sights; if I remember right they were used on the flat tops with the normal front sight as well. Any help on this? |

the front sight is only a bother if you let it be one. with a magnified optic above 3-4x it's barely a shadow. with a 1x optic, you aren't concentrating on the front sight. you're shooting with both eyes open, one eye on the dot, one eye on the target. your brain adds the two together, and the front sight doesn't even enter into the situation. |

Co-witness: lining up a non-magnified red ot optic so the dot rest on the front sight post and both the iron sights and red dot have the same visual plane. The front sight post is visable and easily ignored, or used to help aim at short ranges under 25 meters 4x scopes magnify the Front sight out it is there but is a barley visable blur that does not interfer with aiming. does this help? |
Welcome to the boards.  There's a section farther down the page that is specifically for optics and mounts, which would be more appropriate for this question, and is where you should check first to see if the answer is already available. With zero magnification optics like the Aimpoint and EOtech, the front sight doesn't matter because you should be shooting them with both eyes open. Done this way the optics work fine even if the front is completely blocked. Some people even use the Aimpoint with the front lens cover closed to increase contrast against very bright backgrounds. With magnified optics, the front sight base is either not visible at all or is a faint shadow in the lower area of the view. If you are at very low magnification, say 2X, then it can be annoying but it really isn't a problem. |
