What about some of the moderately priced (under $250) electronic red dot-type
sights from Nikon ( $250), Sightron ($200), and Burris ($175)? Must I spend a bunch more to get a reliable sight? Thanks…

if you want to bet your life on it then you need to spend the money.
if you just want to have fun and plink and maybe throw your money away because it breaks then go less than mil spec.  

that's as honest as i can make it.
