Anyone have problems.
My TA31 RCO fiber optic has completely split. looks like it's in two pieces and although it doesn't appear to affect the performance, it is rather unsightly.

Will post pics later

Mine's cracked all the way round and the only thing that seems to be holding it together is the red fiber optic rod in the middle

Leave it alone, it's normal  The newer ones are clear and don't have cracks and bubbles.

Mine looks just like the one above.  No issues.

There is a gel like liquid between the red fiber optic and the outer housing.  If the cracks are not causing any leaks, then you are good to go.  My 31F went for about a year without any cracks.  They first showed up when using it on a hot day, I think moving it to and from an air conditioned vehicle was the culprit.

The plastic that is used for the housing (lexan?) is supposed to be very good at transmitting light, but it doesn't hold up very well to fracturing.  That said, the fractured housing doesn't allow the optic to leak and doesn't seem to reduce the light transmission, so other than it looking odd,  it isn't a problem.  Trijicon can replace the housing with a different type of plastic that is more fracture resistant, but it doesn't transmit light as well and will lead to a bit darker reticle.

If you look at a lot of the picture posts on here, it's normal. They all seem to crack, but it does'nt hurt the performance.

+1

I had a compact ACOG that did the same thing.

Give ACOG a call and talk to them about it.

I've seen that kind of cracking before, but this one appears to have snapped in two.
Here's some pics

Well now, that is interesting isn't it?

I'd call Trijicon and maybe email these picts to 'em.

I'd never seen one like that before either. While I wouldnt immediately worry about it, I'd call trijicon and see if you can send them the pictures too. I'm curious to hear what they think.

Spoke to Trijicon and they said to take it back to the Distributor in the UK and they'd send it back to the factory
That's too long winded.

I didn't get it from the distributor but picked it up in the US earlier this year, so I suppose I'm stuck.

You should still be able to go to an authorized Trijicon retailer/distributor in country there and they should be willing to ship it for warranty work irregardless of whether it was purchased there.

They are probably suggesting it go to a UK distributor so they will know for sure how to handle shipping tritium internationally.

Maybe you could touch base with a local Trijicon distributor and offer to pay the shipping if they would send it back for you.

They might get a bit shitty about "grey imports".
Actually, I've started to repair it. I've filled the crack with Superglue, which seems to have worked.
When it's fully dry, I'll rub off the excess. The crack will still show, but now that the lexan rod's 'pinged', it shouldn't get any worse.

My TA31A looks much worse than that and it hasn't changed a thing.

(most of the time, there is electrical tape over that part anyways)

I've managed to effect a repair with some Superglue, a bit of wet and dry and a polishing wheel on a Dremel.
You can still see the crack, but can't feel it.
I'm happier now and think it will hold up

You framed the picture of the crack on the TA31's fiber optic tube?

Wow.. didn't know ACOG has issues with it cracking.. Spending that much on it, I would have expect it to be more durable.  At least it doesn't affect performance.  :)

Normal or not for a $1000 investment id say it shouldnt crack at all.Its a vital part to the optic.

That would bother the hell out of me. What exactly holds the entire fiber optic rod onto the scope? I would be worried about a piece breaking off completely.
9/25/2007 2:00:28 PM EDT
[#23]
Unless Im mistaken, the whole rod is suspended in a gel, inside the clear housing. The back end is held in place by sliding into the rear of the housing and the front is held in place by a cross pin.

It seems to me that the scopes have been put in tremendously hard use on many thousands of military weapons. Like everything on a gun, they have their advantages and disadvantages. They are not the be all end all of optics, but never once have we heard of anyone complaining about their being fragile in any way shape or form. In fact, if anything, we hear about how incredibly durable they are.

Hence, I would not worry about the fiber optic, or its housing.
