After reading up on the regular and compact ACOGs I decided that I should get both!

The models I got were the TA-31F (4x- chevron reticle with BDC) and TA50R (3X- triangle reticle).

A few years ago I had one of the larger 3.5X models; I liked it (especially the generous eye relief), but thought it was overlarge for a carbine (my use).

Here is a side view; not much difference in OAL:

This view looking down tells a different story; the Compact is much less massive:

This front view shows the smaller objective view of the Compact:

The rear view shows the much slimmer occular of the Compact:

Weights, with LaRue bases installed:

TA31F = 15 ounces

TA50 = 8 ounces

*****

I plan to use the TA31F on a rifle with a Sabre 18" midlength midweight barrel fluted in a Vltor VIS monolith upper, and the TA50 on a rifle with Denny's 16" midlength midweight Operator barrel on a regular flat-top with a DD Lite handguard. The second rifle is finished, and the first should be done by next week.

Eye relief: some people complain of this on the ACOGs; trying out these I found that I had to run the tele in one notch to get the best head position (with my old 3.5X I used the tele out all the way). But once there, there did not seem to be a problem, and I could maintain a good sight picture in various shooting stances.

So I can only give my first impressions of these optics till I get some range time. At this point the Compact has charmed me with its..."compactness"; hard to think of another word! I think it is approprite for a regular carbine which would see 95% use below 300m; therefore, the lack of BDC is not a handicap. The 4X TA31F should be of more use on the 18" barrel rifle. With bases installed, the Compact weighs only a little over half as much as the regular!

i really like my TA50R-2, it's a 3x with red triangle. It fits just right and my rifle wouldn't be complete without it. The larue mount is just the icing on the cake. It's awesome.

excellent write up and it shows why i chose the compact over the full size

I had never seen a Compact in person before I bought mine, so I was taking a great risk! But I read people like zach here saying they were goodness, so I went for it. I am relieved; the Compact really is appreciably smaller than the regular. Not to put the TA31F down: it is a proven performer, with benefits all its own.

I love my compact 1.5x16 w/amber triangle. Fast on target, great eye relief, and large FOV.
