| I just ordered a 50 beowulf upper and I want a good low power scope to hunt hogs with. My choices are Leupold VXIII 1.5x5 (illuminated recticle) or a Trijicon accupoint 1.5x4. I have an eotech but my old eyes need a little help hunting at night. |
Sometimes posters fail miserably at providing pertinent data in their posts as to what their intended scope application is to be. Big difference between making an optic suggestion for hunting, target or military use. Then there's the everyone's eyes are different and untrained eyes are rarely able to discern the optical clarity differences between Tascos and Leupolds, so the differences between say Leupolds and Schmidt/Benders (which are much closer than the example given) is even harder to determine. Crosshair clarity is also very eye specific, for instance, I cannot use a Simmons scope for some reason; for every one I have looked thru has what I call fading crosshairs, (the longer I look at 'em the more undefined they appear to become, until they dissapear entirely). Here's just few points that one should cover when asking about scope optics: 1. intended use 2. range of use 3. type of use 4. rifle type 5. budget for the scope IM me a link to your post or info so I can locate it and I'll help out if I can.... To the OP, you too are in somewhat of a delima from my point of view, in that while night-hunting hogs is legal in most states - the fact that you have an EO already makes me shy away from recommending a different choice. The Aimpoint or EO would seem to me to the perfect choice for night hunting hogs and should be good out to the useable length of most serious spotlights as well as being faster on target than the 2 excellent scope choices you mentioned. BTT, for someone with more experience w/ the 2 choices mentioned. mike |
I shoot at the hogs at around 70 yards. You are probably right about the eotech being as good as any. I wish I could look thru a trijicon accupoint but they are non existent in my area. Do you have experience with the accupoint? Thanks for your time. |

Link to my thread selling TR21R which are out of stock at the moment ETA posted link because I have a pic through the scope to show ret. I ran a TR21 for a while, it has very sharp glass, is very fast for a non-1x scope once you are used to the reticle, and uses 1" rings. I personally think it is one of the best bang for buck scopes out there. It is not perfect, in the twilight I would have trouble picking up the Ret as fast as I could in daylight or true dark. It is 1.25 lowest power, so it takes a bit of practice to be able to run it fast at cqb ranges. It also has Very long eye relief which pretty much requires the LT EER mount. I got a great deal on a ShortDot and so the TR21 went down the road to help pay for the S&B. It did not go far down the road as a local friend purchased it to mount on his deer hunting shotgun, he loves the long eye relief as he is paranoid about getting eyebrowed when shooting up hill. I will be able to give more hunting feed back on the scope after this fall and his running it through bambi season. |

you might try posting this question over on 50Beowulf.com While I dont shoot a 50B I do shoot something akin to it for hogs. I used a leupold like the one you described until I got the itch to try an EoTEch, the EoTech currently is what Im using and Ive found I get faster follow up shots using the Eo then the 1.x-4 I had before. Now, IMO the down side was I didnt feel right taking longer shots with the EoTech that I did with the leupold. Have not tried the trijicon. |
