I'm thinking about using the DPMS rear sight:

Can this be used as is, or are there any recommended modifications?

Should work as is.
I assume that it is going on a flat top.

The most common complaint I've heard/had with these is the crossbolts are a little on the skinny side and the knobs will strip out if it's tightened too much. Overall it's a simple sight to get used to since it's really a standard A2 sight, I just don't know about trusting it on a go-to gun because of the mounting hardware being the weak link.

Same here.

If the above reasons concern you, take a look at either a CCH (Cut Carry Handle) or LMT BUIS. Basically the same sights, just a bit more robust.
