I need a spotting scope.

Which one(s) do you guys like?  Cost is always a factor, but I won't buy junk.

Could use it from 50 to 600 yards (maybe even longer someday, but unlikely).

Thanks.

I use a Bausch & Lomb Elite 20-60 80MM, found on Ebay for $150 .  Great glass and a hell of a lot cheaper then an 82MM Kowa!  It works fine for me out to 500 Yards.

B&L's are good glass, and you can find them in the EE and on auction sites.

Are you wanting to see bullet holes in paper, or glass for game? Lots of variables to consider.

The best glass won't consistently see .22 cal bullet holes at 300. I've tried Zeiss, Swarovski, Kowa, B&L, and a few "miracle" scopes. The good ones will let you see them some of the time, none all the time. .30 cal holes at 300 are pretty consistently visible, smaller is a maybe.

I like angled eyepieces, they are comfortable in virtually all positions and let you get close and square to the eyepiece without breaking your neck. Additionally, the eye relief of the eyepiece is very important. Most all the better scopes can be had with a 25-27x LER (Long Eye Relief) eye piece. for range use these are optimum. Resolution will be best with a fixed power eyepiece over a variable, and mirage will make anything stronger unusable most days on any square range anyway. I have a 27LER that I use for most all range work, and a 20-60 that I sometimes take in the field if I know I will be viewing across canyons. Mirage across open canyons is less common so higher magnification works better there.

If you are using one for field spotting consider how you will support it, carry it, etc. Size and weight may be factors, as well as suitable support. The 80-88mm scopes are big and a lot to pack around if you are going far or often. A 60-66mm might be a better choice for that use.

You are right to buy once and get what you need. Poor glass is very annoying.
