In several pics I've seen slings attached to the front sight (tied to vertical supports) using what looks like 550 cord .  

Won't this pull the sight out of alignment?

The only way you might see a problem is if you're really cranking on the sling to steady the weapon.  Of course, you'll get that with any barrel mounted sling set up.  We used to rig our M16's that way before all the fancy doo dads came out.  The Israelis still do it.

It wont pull the sight out of alignment, but 550 cord will melt and break away after a few dozen rounds if tied directly to the front sight assembly.

None of mine ever melted.
