I am not sure what I am getting at here just kinda rambling, but I never use my 0-200 ghost ring on my rear sight. I was shooting last Mon. at 100yds, and I don't know if it is because I was never trained with these sights, but I find the smaller ghost ring much easier to shoot with. I find using the larger 0-200 ghost ring I have trouble getting the same sight picture. I do shoot NTCH, and I used to shoot rifle competition when I was in high school, but that was with competition target sights. I guess I am just wondering if there is anyone else like me out there. Good night DMgangl |
You just haven't done enough low-light or night shooting with iron sights. You will learn REALLY fast how valuable that big open rear aperture is. |
If all you're doing is shooting paper, the small aperture is fine. I learned really quick in Iraq to keep it set on the 0-200 aperture! |
The small apature is fine for slow fire shooting at longer ranges but its almost useless at close ranges (25 yards and in) by useless I mean really slow. Pat |
EXACTLY! |
In a combat situation yes, but being a civi it is more likely that I will be in a situation were all I have to defend myself is my pistol. That doesn't mean that I don't practice cqb distances with my rifle and with the proper ghostring. DMgangl |

Seen this one before. Only an arm-chair warrior would think a pistol is "stupid" for CQB or home defense. Set two targets 20 yards apart facing each other. Stand directly between them facing 90 degrees to each. Without moving your feet alternate shooting each target. You'll find out very quickly what pistols are good for. Also... If pistols are so "stupid" why are they issued by the military and law enforcement agencies? Oh yeah, I use my small aperture for 100 yard plinking, just get a same plane aperture set and you won't have any elevation issues switching between apertures. |
Actually Rifles are faster. Here are the results of an experiment I did to tes the relative CQB speeds of various optics and iron sights on rifles and I also tested my Wilson 1911. The drill was this facing down range at low ready with both the rifle and the pistol. At the buzzer fire 2 rounds into each target. The targets were IDPA targets. IDPA scoreing was also used. I fired each drill 10 times with each optic and with the pistol and counted only the 5 best to eliminate the learning curve. Here are the averages. The guns were my Colt 6920 with the following optics, (1.25-4 power Accupoint set on 1.25, Eotech, Burris Fast Fire Red Dot sight, Iron Sights, and my Mak 90 with a apature site. The pistol is my Wilson 1911 CQB with Iron sights and with a Crimson Trace Laser sight) Summary. Average Score 1. 4.45 Accupoint 2. 4.5 Fast Fire Laurue mini reddot 3. 4.56 Eotech 4. 5.57 Buis 5.57 (AR with Back up Irons large apature) 5. 6.06 AK47 6. 7.3 Wilson with Laser 7. 9.22 Wilson with sights The score is a combination of raw time plus penalties for hits outside the -0 zone. You can see the Ar is much faster. Even the AK is faster than the pistol. I have done simular drills at 7 yards and the rifle still has the edge. I recently started shooting 3 gun competition and in my shoots we shoot some stages with both the rifle then over again with the pistol. The rifle is always faster for everyone across the board. These are short range stages. Pistols are carried because they are handy not because they are effective. Rifles are much faster and more accurate and all ranges. Pistol are used and carried because they are light and handy and can always be on your person in case trouble comes. But when you have warning of impending danger you would be a fool not to get a long gun. As a police officer when we get man with gun calls we show up with our AR's or shotguns. If an officer shows up with just a pistol he can expect a letter of reprimand to be added to his file. Pat |

No where in this thread did anyone say the word " pistols are Stupid" except you. If all you have is a pistol, they work... but if you have a choice.. then Rifles work better. Your argument about LEO and the Military using pistols is lame.. Pistols are a secondary weapon issued to a small majority as nothing more then a back up for ....that's right... you guessed it.... a rifle... And with LEOs a pistol is also a weapon of last resort as there job is to save life's... not take them. Pistol rds poke holes in things... rifle rds tear shit up..... and to the original poster... use what ever aperture you are comfortable with. |
