| OK, what does everyone think. I want an Eotch for my AR. I can't decide on the 511 (N batt) or 512 (AA batt). Is the 511 version a pain in the butt? Should I get the 512 for ease of batt replacement? |

I had the 511A65 which is “N” powered. I never had a set of batteries go completely dead on me during use. The reticle would flash on power-up indicating low batteries, but I was never left with out optics due to dead batteries. The EOTech size verses battery type can be a hard decision though. For me the compactness of the optic was more important verses battery type. |

The Eotech will automatically turn off, to save your battery, if you forget to turn it off yourself. If turned on with the ^ button, it will run 8 hours before turning off automatically. If turned on with the v button, it will run 4 hours before turning off automatically. A nice feature. In addition, even before the battery dies, you will get plenty of warning. When the battery is getting low, after each shot, the reticle will blink. That is your warning that you need to replace the batteries. N batteries may do this when hot, a characteristic of Alkalines. Alkalines lose voltage when hot and will give indications of taking a dump. Same as when using alkalines with digital cameras. Lithiums don't drop voltage when hot. You can get Lithiums in AA size, but for now, N's only come in Alkaline type. The AA versions will run about 10x longer than the N versions. That is why many prefer the Eotech 512 and 552 (AA models) and use only Lithium batteries. |
I wish they had a cheaper version of the 553. I really want one that uses CR123's so I can have two spare batteries in my CAA stock. |

If they made a standard eotech, no fancy mount, just a standard model, that ran on 123's... they'd sell a ton. EVERYTHING uses 123 batteries nowadays, it'd be nice to standardize and only need 1 type of spare battery for your sight, lights, etc. for the price increase on the 553 you could probably buy a spare 511 or 512 and forget batteries. |
Buy the 511, and get a Tangodown battlegrip, buy some extra N cell for back up and you are good to go. |
Its like you read my mind. |
