I have a Bushmaster flat-top 16" with open sights.   I took a carbine class over the weekend.   They (local community college) are offering a precision rifle class in April.  It will involve shooting out to 300 yds.  I think I'd rather take this class with a scope than iron sights.    I intend to eventually build a 20" AR with a scope, and dont mind buying the scope now so I can take the class.    I lean to Leopold, and was thinking a 3x9 variable.    Wondering if I can get recommendations on what brand and model I should buy, and how I should mount it on my AR, which has a removable carry handle on it right now.  It seems there are tons of 3x9 scopes out there, and I am hoping you guys that are into optics can steer me in the right direction for a good AR scope.

Go to LaRue.com and look at the Leupold/LaRue mount combo options.  The 2.5X8X36 is a great scope for you needs as is the 1.5X5X20.  Both have the special purpose reticle which is outstanding.

Do a search of this forum and you will find that LaRue makes the best scope mounts period for AR15's.  If LaRue does not make a mount for a particular scope then I don't want that particular scope until LaRue makes a mount.

I personally have the Leupold CQ/T with the LaRue mount and I love this combo.  But if I had to do it all over again I would get the 1.5X5X20 Leupold.

I have a VX II 3-9x on my Bushmaster and I like it a lot. I am considering the VX II in 4-12x or the new Mark II when they come out also in 4-12x for my 308 (which should be here next week ). I'm also considering the LaRue mount or a set of ARMS #22H rings, but I'll need the 30mm spacers since both these scopes have a 1" tube.

I actually want both of the Leupold scopes.  I prefer the lower power one verses my CQ/T because its for my AR congfigured for my Close Quarter shooting.  The 1.5X5 gives me a tad more power than the 1-3X of the CQ/T.

Yeah, the Larue mount w/ Leupold scopes sure look nice, but that's a lot of jack to be spending just to shoot squirrels, rockchucks, and coyotes?  What about a setup for folks in that category?

Lucky for me I have a contact and I can get any Leupold at wholesale so that makes my scope selection even easier.
