So I picked up my first AR15 this weekend at the local gun show in Orlando. It is an Olympic Arms .40 SW (got it so I can shoot it at the indoor range I go to). In addition, I picked up a red dot sight and mount (probably should have bought an aimpoint, but I'm just getting familiar with the whole AR-15 world) from one of the vendors at the show. The particular model I purchased has the A3 removable handle. Upon removal of the handle, there is no rear sight on the rifle (which I'm assuming is ok). In the handle's place, I mount the red dot sight. My question comes to the aligning/zeroing of the sight. The front sight on the rifle is a fixed sight. I'm assuming that proper alignment is to line the red dot up with the top of the front sight, and perform the zeroing based on that alignment. Is this correct, or can I remove the front sight from the rifle, and solely use the red dot? I know this is probably a stupid question, but its my first rifle, so I don't understand the logic behind everything. However, it seems to me that I have to have the fixed sight in front in order to have 2 points of reference for making sure my eye position is in the appropriate spot. Thanks for you help. |
Go to the range and obtain a good cheeck-weld position and use the dot. You don't have to align the dot with your irons. That is the beauty of the Red Dot Sights. Also, if you have never used an AR, get a BUIS (Back Up Iron Sight), and practice with the Iron Sights when you get a chance. Happy Shooting. |

I'm betting you are running a cheap 30mm red dot? When you mount it on the flat top it is to low to look through? Front sight is in the way? I used a 50mm Barska and it lined up perfect, but a smaller red dot is to low, you need this riser (the one for $19.97) in order to look through it right. The other way I'd mount it is This cantilever mount at the top of the page mounted on the carry handle. If you use the right scope (I used a BSA 30mm as shown in the photo) it will "co-witness" correctly with your sights. You can also see another flat top riser at the bottim of that last linked page. This is a good BUIS to mount behind your red dot, then if your red dot ever gos out you just remove it useing a quarter to turn the thumb nuts and go to useing iron sights. (if you go the flat top/riser route) You also should sight in your carry handle sight, then remember to always bring it with you to the range, just incase your optic gos tits up, if you don't have a BUIS. |
