--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I preface this question by saying, I do not currently own an AR rifle. Why not just replace the rifle's carry handle in the event of an EOTECH or Aimpoint failure? How much time does it take to install a carry handle? The only advantage that I can see, pun intended, is the BUIS gives you an immediate ability to acquire targets rather than the delay associated with the reinstalllation of the carry handle. Please offer your comments. Thanks in advance.

Carry handles get stolen, lost, forgotten, dropped into the "drink". etc.

You are correct for 99.99% of the general population in that for them, to put the carry handle back on will offer no loss of life as they are never in real world situations.  The $100 spent on the BUIS could go towards ammo or something else as they will never REALLY need the speed of a mounted BUIS.  As a matter of fact you can use a dead Aimpoint as a large ring rear sight and get pretty good groups using it and the fixed front sight.  People like toys and that is why M-4 look alikes now sport bipods, fake lasers, BUIS, risers, flashlights...ect..and will in most cases not be used except for walking 25yds from the car to the range line.  Nice light carbines now weight 8+ pounds with all sorts of bells and crap hanging off them.  A couple of weeks of real life carry would trim the extra stuff back off in favor of lighter weight and less snag.

For the other .01% of the civilian population and the police and military, they need to ensure that they are fully ready to operate in the event of a unlikely breakdown and have the ability to fire from 0-150meters fast.  They can and must practice with what they have to get the ability to react when and if the above situation happens.

BUT:  People have the right to buy and use what they want on what they want for whatever reason they want.  As long as there is a free market these items will be bought and with use, imporvements will be made to these items by the makers by imput from the buyer.

I've had an optic fail in the middle of real world events, and I don't mean battery failure.  Immediate activation of the BUIS was required, and there was no way in the world swapping anything out was going to work.

As already mentioned, figure out what you are going to do with the weapon, and go from there.  For some people it won't make a difference, but for others its not an option.

Carry handle?  I guess that if you're naive enough to think that everybody around here is buying off the shelf rifles from Bushmaster then you might think that we have carry handles available.  But I guess it's hard to see that when you've got all that condescension in the way.

Lately I've been seeing people mount the carry handle on the bottom rail close to the mag well if it should ever be needed...

It looks weird, but if you're using a reflex or holosight and don't want to spend for a proper BUIS, then I guess this setup is decent.

I will say again, it does look strange...

If you're in the military and stuck using the carry handle then it makes sense to do that.  If you're a civvy then there's nothing wrong with a detachable carry handle that can't be fixed using a hacksaw, a bastard file and a bottle of Birchwood Casey aluminum black.

Big +1!

When your weapon's your lifeline, it's generally a good idea to not fuck around. I'm just finishing a deployment in which I've been to every major FOB, Camp, and LSA in Theatre.  We clean weapons before we eat. Just because it works when you roll out the gate doesn't mean it's going to work all the time. Shit happens, and every second counts.  In the amount of time I'd spend putting that handle on, I could deploy my BUIS, shoot, reload, and be back on target.

Remove Eotech, drop in dump pouch, open pocket containing carry handle, screw carry handle on...

no, I like the idea of flipping up my KAC 300m without losing my cheekweld and interrupting that long string of lead flying from my bullet hose at the range!

Or better yet.... get a LMT BUIS or chop your carry handle.

That chopped BUIS was already mentioned...

I think the OP just wants to know if a separate BUIS is that much better than a carry handle.    You seem to agree with the rest of us-->  "yes"
