How can I tell if my barrel has a M4 style front post that is made for the flattops or a the standard one?

An A3 post will be .04 inches taller than an A2 post

Posts are the same its the front site bases that are diferent. On an F marked FSB the machined out part between the ears is .040 higher than a standard base.Posts are the same height unless you have a flat top with a standard base then you need a .040 higher front post.Colt,LMT,CMMG use the proper FSB on their flat tops.

The barrel is colt. the front sight base is marked "C 5" with a circle in between the two with what looks like an "RI" inside of the circle. No F mark anywhere. Were some of them unmarked?

I have no idea of what the barrel was orginally used on, but it is a 1/7twist pencil barrel that was orginally 16" but has been cut down to 14.5.

All I can see thats left on the barrel is "C MP 5.56 NATO"

Thats a Colt barrel..if it was cut down chances are some one replaced the FSB or might not have had one to begin with..not saying its not the right type but ive never heard of one marked that way.The only way to tell is see if it zeros properly with the removable carry handle once its installed.IU know sporter light weight carbines had 16" pencil barrels.

You'll know as soon as you go to sight it in, which is probably the only way you are going to find out since your AR15 is such a mutt.

Let's see some of your "technical information" knowledge, instead of posting crap like that! You are such a fart in a mitten!

FWIW, I thought the only difference was that the front sight post was taller. The FSB itself is the same. The reason that the ones with the higher front sight post are "F" marked, is so that the people at the factory can tell which ones go to flat tops and which ones do not. That's what I was explained when I asked. Someone can correct or confirm this?

The reason why the thread got a is because it is so messed up.  It will now take 3 pages to get the correct info out after everyone is finished posting what they believe to be correct and after leading the original poster astray.

scottryan,

As you can see someone asked a question. I gave him what I have been told. I asked someone to confirm or correct what I was told. You just come in and post crap with no "technical information." Why don't you just answer the question instead of being a damn snob? I know you have a lot of knowledge! I respect that part, however, your attitude stinks! You can post the corect info and set me straight on what is true. That way, I now know and you have contributed to making ARFCOM more knowledgeable. Everyone wins!

Well I have a 14.5" Colt barrel on a flat top from the factory. It does not have a "F" on the left hand side. It does however have a Y 2 on the right hand side. In between the Y2 is R1 with a circle around it. I have not had any problems getting a zero from a Colt carry handle or from a Troy rear sight. I also would like to know what the Y2 means and no F marked on the sight base.
