I am looking for some help in choosing a sight for precision shooting out to a couple of hundred yds.

I have an aimpoint, and thats a fine optic for defense and plinking, but when trying to be a bit more precise, the big red dot is just too big.

I was originally thinking of an ACOG of some sort. What put me off (besides the price) was the note on the website about how is perfectly normal for one side to be slightly out of focus -- just the design. Well, if it really is there and noticable I probably couldn't live with it -- especially at that price.

Then I started looking at the Leupold Mk4 tactical scopes -- no cheaper, but probably more than good enough for what I want.

Then I noticed the (C&R) price of the ACOGs at Brownells ... and they started looking attactive again

So, help me decide -- I am going to be happy with anything that lets me put rounds within an inch of where I aim at 100yds -- I could almost do it with iron sights, but my eyes are getting old, and I think I really do need some magnification to help at those ranges.

Is the ACOG really more of a "battle sight" than a precision sight?
How would using it compare to a Leupold with the new (improved) mil-dot reticule and bbullet drop compensator?

Any comments/advice gladly received.

Hi PhilipPeake,

The Trijicon ACOGS are great sight one of the best for a AR15 platform but they are not the best when it comes to precision.  The Leupold MK4 would be better for accuracy and for the sounds of things that is were I would recommend you going.
