I wanted to get some opinions one how far forward or back on a flat top m-4 to mount a red dot scope like an Aimpoint or S.P.O.T. with a cantilever type mount.  I'v got mine mounted in the middle with enough room for a BUIS when I get one but I have seen many mounted all the forward on the receiver.  Any thoughts????

Forward is better for a zero magnification optic like an Aimpoint.  Makes both eyes open shooting easier and more natural, in my opinion.  Also, it prevents all interference with your BUIS, and, if you place it with the edge of the mount flush with the front of the reciever, you can always put it back on in the correct spot, even in the dark, with out haveing to fuck around with T numbers.

Also, for what it's worth, the US Army in FM 3-22.9 recommends that you put it as far forward as possible.

With an Aimpoint QRP - till the knob starts clicking (built in torque limiter)

With a LaRue or ARMS mount - when the lever is in the correct position.

Anything else - finger tight, plus a 1/4 turn.
