for instance, the cmore is sold with either 2,4,6,8 size dots.

thanks

It refers to mintues of angle, one minute of angle is equivalent to about 1 inch at 100 yards, and so on. More technicaly it is a subdivision of a degree.

A 4 moa dot will completely obscure a 4" bullseye at 100 yards

Technically, a Minute of Angle is 1/60 of one degree.

Imagine yourself standing in the middle of a circle where the outer edge of that circle is 100 yards away (your target).  Now cut that circle into 360 slices like a pizza.  Then take one slice and cut it into 60 more thin slices.  Each slice would be one MOA at its outermost edge and would measure approximately 1.04" wide.

Mathematically, you can figure it by taking the distance to the target (100 yards) and converting that to inches (3,600) to give you the radius of the circle.  Multiply by two to give you the diameter of the circle (7,200).  Now multiply by pie (3.14) to give you the circumference of the circle (22,608 inches).  Now divide by 360 to get the length of one degree (62.8 inches) and then divide by 60 to get the length of one MOA (1.04666... inches).

You can use that formula for any distance.  For instance to figure 1 MOA at 375 yards.
375 x 3 x 12 x 2 =27,000 x 3.14 = 84,780 /360=235.5/60=3.925 inches = 1 MOA at 375 yards.
