Do you mount an Eotech directly on the flat top rail of an AR15 or it requires a mount?  Thanks in advance.

Yes, you could mount the EOTech directly on the upper receiver rail but a mount like LaRue EOTech mount could also be used to raise the optic up a little so that the back up iron sights cowitness approx. at the lower 1/3.

My EOTech 551 is directly mounted on my upper now but I'm planning to get a LaRue mount soon because it improves the view.

Thanks for the answer.  I'm still a bit confuse as to why you would want your co-witness to be at the 1/3 level instead of the center of the reticle?

Lower 1/3 co-witness frees up some of the field of view that the iron sights take up. Absolute co-witness which is what you get when you mount the EOTech directly to the flat top can get annoying to some folks. The irons sit directly in the center of your FOV.
