One of our SWAT guys told me that all their Eotechs have lost their zero at one point or another.   He says other than being banged around in a soft case inside the trunk, they really don't get abused.  He said the mount is solid and the sight doesn't move, but every now and then, they have to rezero their M16's.  Any idea  why?

They need to contact Eotech.

I'm more than done arguing Aimpoint vs. EOTech, but I have seen a couple EOTech's that would not zero or would not hold zero.

I spoke with someone at EoTech and he stated that if it would not hold zero or zero at all, send it back and they would fix it.  It should hold zero!

Yes, definitely contact EOTech ASAP.

I'm just curious, do you happen to know what EOTech model and revision your SWAT team uses?

I asked him but he isn't sure what revision or model it is.   I think he still uses a redfield on his 16.  The department is spending the bucks on his Leupold and Acogs so he really doesn't care.

+1

Either something is seriously wrong with the sight, seriously wrong with the mount, or seriously wrong with the person operating it/armorer maintaining it.

Contact Eotech that's what they're there for.

How many is "all"?  There's no doubt that everyone makes a lemon from time to time, and if you're talking about 1 or 2 EOThingies I can understand it.  BUT if you've got TWO DOZEN EO'ed ARs, and they are ALL losing zero, then I'd be SHOCKED if the issue wasn't something else besides the EOTech's mechanical ability to hold zero.

Sounds like the armorer is removing them and not using a return to zero mount of some kind.

I bang mine around all the time, and I swap out the Eotech for a CQT now and then
and it always goes right back to zero using the LaRue QD mount.

If you don't use a QD mount the sight will not return to zero using the factory mounts,
nor is it supposed to.

Well, he didn't go into detail but I highly doubt he meant only 1 or 2 lost their zero.  We have an armorer but upkeep of the weapon is the officer's responsibility.  The armorer only fixes the problems and I don't see why he would need to remove the mount.  Obviously, if he did remove the mount, any complaints about losing zero would be understandable (I don't believe they use QD mounts).

I have a 3 week old 552-f and last week it went bonkers on me. I never removed it or hit it with anything. If it goes bonkers on me again, off to eotech that thing goes.

I watched a half a dozen EOTechs in a 40 hour rifle class.......2 worked, 2 had zeroing issues, and 2 were ditched in favor of iron sights after they wouldn't zero or hold zero.

I had a 551 on my issued SWAT gun for about 4 years. First on a cantilever mount on an M16A2 carbine, and then on an M4. It never lost zero and we have never had any that wouldn't hold zero. If they are having those kinds of issues, I think that mounting is probably the likely culprit, and the operators aren't torqueing them down good enough.

We have had a couple develop power problems over the years. EOTech will fix them.
