I just purchased a midlength A2 upper. The rearsight has a considerable amount of play in it, left to right wobble in the horizontal plane. I dis-assembled it and then checked the parts for wear. The parts all look okay so I reassembled it and the play is still there. When I elevate the sight it seems to shift and even out after three clicks up. Anyone have any ideas?

The sight  has intentional play in it the spring tension keeps it consistantly to one side so it maintains same point of aim.  In short there is nothing wrong with the sight it is designed that way.  You should notice that when you twist it out of the normal position it returns to the other side to the same position it was in.

I found it worded differently in an old thread

All A2 and A3 rear sight bases are designed with a spring loaded detent and spring which rotates the sight base slightly to the left. They are like this so that the sight base will not bind when changing elevation and returns to the same sight plane after adjusting the elevation. Also if you look straight down at the flip aperature, you will see that it has been machined to offset the counter-clockwise turn of the rear sight assembly

USMC,

Many thanks. I was unsure if this was an issue or not. However, I did get a crash course in A2 rearsight assembly and disassembly

Its the spring loaded ball bearing that makes it do that, its normal.
