what's the deal with same plane apertures? after searching, i found that the front and rear aperture do not change elevation (hence the term "same plane," duh), but which rear sights have same plane apertures and which ones change elevation?

XS Sight Systems makes a same plane aperture that can be used in the standard A2 sight.  It can also be used in any rear sight that uses the same aperture as an A2.

so than a regular A2 rear aperture is not same plane? what is the elevation difference between the large and small apertures?

ETA: what about the difference in an A1?

I want to say it's something like 6MOA difference between the two.

The same plane sight is a better mousetrap. The XS (formerly Ashley) also has slightly larger apertures and is great to use in the real world. Using the aperture needed for the situation and not worrying about your zero changing is a good thing.

I put XS 24/7 Tritium Stripe Same Plane (front & rear) on both of my AR's.
These are the shit!

according to my shooting, it was about 6" differance at 50 yards. the small aperture shoots higher than the large one.

The difference between the two apertures is 2 clicks on the 8/3 A2 sight and 4 clicks on the 6/3 that is used for detachable carry handles and similar sights.

You can't answer that questions.  It depends on the sight radius (it's a larger difference with the carbine length sight radius).  It also varies between who/when the aperture was made.

There is a FAQ on this on the XS Sights web-page.  They tested apertures from 3 different vendors and got 3 different results.

The only way to be sure is to test YOUR aperture in your firearm.
