Can some one explain the basics as far as what you can mount and use?

Say for instance you had a monocular - can you mount it in front of an ACOG and have a 4x powered NV set  up? How about with an aimpoint - same deal?

In front of  optic (closer to shooter) or behind?

TIA

I have had very little luck using my GenIII mono with my Acogs. The reticles are too bright to put the scope infront of the NV.  With the NV in front of the scope the picture is grainy and the point of aim is way off.  A NV compatable Aimpoint works well.   But most of the time you'll find you want the NV head mounted so you can move around and see what you are doing.  When your NV is head mounted an IR laser on the rifle is the way to go.

In my experience the nv has to mounted behind the optic so that you look through the nv first.  I have successfully used an ANPVS-14 (monocular) behind a leupold mark 4 cqt and also an aimpoint compm2.  Both of these optics allow you to adjust the brightness of the reticle to compensate for night vision optic use.  I've never attempted to use nv with the trijicon  but i'm pretty sure it won't work because there is no way to adjust the reticle brightness.  If the ACOG is your optic of choice then I would say that head mounted nvgs with an ir laser would be the best way to shoot at night.

I am not trying to second guess anyone here, just asking, but why do they advertise the ACOG especially the coveted NSN model as being night vision "friendly" and compatible if this is the case.  I had an NSN and used it with my head mounted crappy russian Generation 1's and you could actually see through the scope but it would be hard to make any kind of an accurate shot.  I see what you are saying about putting the scope up front, but I have seen pictures of Delta Operators doing this with their PVS14's.

This is interesting.
I use a TA 31 mounted in front of a PVS 14 and I have great results. While the donut is bright it is by now means overpowering. This allows me a 4X ngiht vision sight and then if I want I simply go to the aimpoint mounted out front  and no fuss no muss.  1X red dot.
