Guys,

I just bought a flatop upper with a 16" bbl through the equipment exchange...Anyway..

I am putting an Aimpoint on her.

I know that many of you use BUIS, which I intend to get. Why do some of you use the solid "A2" style over the Flip Up and vs. versa. I know to each his own, but my thinking that is if I am using a red dot style sight, i want 100% clear view and the "A2" style is large and bulky as compared to the flip up's.

Is it just an elevation thing?

Thanks for reading this.

The non-flip sights are more durable, are always there when you need them and they don't interfere with the sight picture.

I went with the CCH because:

No levers, springs, buttons, etc., for me to fumble with when deployement is required.

I'm comfortable with the sight picture.

Durable.

I already owned a carry handle so the cost of the BUIS was $0.

Some like the uncluttered view the flip up sight offers.

Some like the stability of a fixed sight.

Your Aimpoint mount will make a difference too.

You'll have to decide what works best for you. But you'll probably end up like the rest of us and eventually by both and settle on the one that works best for your eyes and or shooting requirement.

A cut carry handle is probably the most cost effective way to go, but they tend to use up most if not all your rail space.  If you want an A2 sight, I'd get the LMT A2 BUIS.  It's a fixed BUIS with A2 sights but only uses 2 or 3 spaces on the upper.  Great space saver and works just like a cut carry handle.  I highly reccomend the LMT/EoTech setup, I've never seen it with an aimpoint, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.  MJD

I like having my Aimpoint reticle as uncluttered as possible, and for that reason I prefer a flip up BUIS. I'm partial to the Troy Battlesight and the ARMS #40. I have a Colt cut carry handle that worked great as a fixed BUIS, but I found that having it block the lower third of my M2's reticle was too distracting.

Clearly it comes down to personal preference-you can make valid arguments pro or con for either solution. If you have the opportunity perhaps you could try both a fixed and a flip up prior to making your final decision. If having your BUIS always in your optic's field of view doesn't bother you then the durability and simplicity of a fixed BUIS will probably be your best solution. If you're like me and are bothered by the permanent presence of the fixed BUIS in your Aimpoint's reticle then some flavor of folding sight would be best.

Here is an ARMS #40 under an ACOG TA11D and a Troy folder under a Comp M2:
