I want to get a PVS14 but since they cost about 3000 bux Im looking for a PVS4.
I want it for my M4 and want it to be mil spec if possible

What is the quality of these scopes?
Is it easy to find replacement parts?
Any other night vision scope I should consider in this price range?
what upgrades can you get and which do you recommend?
where can I get one for a good price?

I reviewed one for SGN a while back.....

they are big, heavy, and the ocular is placed to virtually ensure you have absolutely no cheekweld and that your head is craned uncomfortably.  They are, at least for me, very uncomfortable and tiring to use.

That said, there are plenty of spare parts for them and places that can work on them.  They are available from a wide number of sources.

Performance is not in the ballpark of an AN/PVS-14.  Resolution is good, but light amplification is ho hum.  On the plus side it's a rugged US Mil Spec unit.  I just found it uncomfortable to use on either a FAL or an AR...

I do have a followup question.  For individuals owning the older PVS 4's I've read that it is possible to upgrade to third generation. Is this information accurate and do you have any figures relating to cost? Also what does it take to perform the upgrade?

I believe they can be upgraded and I think you can increase the magnification as well

They can be upgraded, but I believe the cost would make it similar to an AN/PVS-14.....

Already have a PVS 14.

I was considering options for a dedicated rifle scope. Thanks for the info.

They PVS4 gen 3 is not even close to the Gen3 today. I belive its around 45lp and most of the Gen3 today starts aorund 51lp and most are 64lp. I had 3 PVS4 and they are weigh to big for me. USPC-Guy  here on Ar15 sell some very nice PVS14's for around $2,000 They are nice. If you go with a PVS4 you should be able to pick one up for 1k or a little more but I would not pay 1500 like some want. If you go that much look at a US Night Vision 440 gen 2+

while i agree the pvs4 is big, heavy and outdated it is still a good starter scope. if you mount it to a flattop the check weld is much improved. the lens is an excellant example of mil spec glass though.

the gen3 tubes will cost you about $3500 new, if you can find one. i know of one brand new pvs4 gen3 for sale and its going for 5k. the problem with tubes in these is they are 25mm. no one is making a 25mm tube anymore, AFAIK.

if your going to spend that much you can find a used raptor or litton aquilla/nighthawk.

your comparing apples to oranges though when refering to the pvs14. the 14 is not a weapon site. sure you can put a red dot infront of it and use a 3x lens but that is not the way to use a pvs14. you will loose a lot of light gathering ability with the 3x lens on the pvs14.

if you want a deticated NV rifle scope, the pvs4 in a flat top is not a bad place to start. i have had good luck with the USNV scopes in gen3 also.
