Being that the group buy is now gone, Ive been thinking of getting a S&B short dot, or waiting to get a TA11F or a TA31F. Ive already done a search and read the 2 threads on it already, but im intrested in some new perspective... Some one please help me make my decision. Remman |
| Totally different optics IMO. The Short Dot is more versatile and precise but requires batteries, is heavier, costs more and is larger. The ACOG is more durable and lighter and cheaper but is not adjustable and can suffer washout, cant be focused for people who wear glasses and is not precise or as fast at close range. The price difference is large enough for optic + mount to be almost Jeep vs. Hummer comparison. Most people simply cant afford an optic the price of an ACOG much less one almost twice as expensive. Currently noone offers the features that the Short Dot offers. It has everything I want in an optic but the fact I could buy an entire rifle or pistol + ACOG for the price of a Short Dot has me leery since I am not a rich man. My biggest fear is in less than a year someone comes out with a scope thats got all the short dot features, is smaller and lighter and costs $500 less. There will be little resale market for a short dot as the people who can afford one want new ones. There will always be a resale market for ACOGs though at their more reasonable price point. In conclusion if money means nothing to you get the short dot. If money is tight get the ACOG. |

I have very little experience with the Short Dot (about 5 minutes fondling on a 500yd range) but compared to my TA11 ACOG, I would take the Short Dot if money were no object and I anticipated betting my life on the outcome. However, at the end of the day, it is still the user that determines the effectiveness of the weapon system. I would feel completely comfortable betting my life on the TA11; but I think the Short Dot has the potential to surpass that. Of course, this all assumes you can use both scopes to their maximum potential, and I don't think there are a lot of people who meet that criteria (and I am certainly not one of them). |
