I love Aimpoints, and I love ACOGs.
I am currently putting together an M14 Bush rifle.
My optics that I am considering are:

Aimpoint Comp ML2

ACOG TA24 or TA26

Is the added .5x power of the ACOG, worth being saddled with the specific eye relief requirements?

on M14 i would go with something more than 1.5X

Not the question.
That's a different issue entirely.

I don't think so.  I looked at one of those for my BAR10, and the gain wasn't worth the tiny FOV they have compared to an Aimpoint.

I'd pick the Aimpoint too.  Just curious, how much are the ACOGs you are considering and does the cost include a mount?

I think the Aimpoint is the hands-down winner for CQB to 100+ yards.  Beyond 100+ yards I'd want higher magnification than 1.5x to ID targets.

And considering the price....
That's what I thought.

So what about the TA40 (2X)?
Would that be worth it?

With mount?  Oh... about $900.

Here's a pic of JohnnyReb's M14 with a 1.5X ACOG:

That has a comfortable eye relief.
I think I could handle the 2.1" eye relief of the TA40, in a similar setup.
BUT, the question remains...

...is it worth it, to have 2X?

I installed an Aimpoint M2 on my Remington 7600P (Police Patrol rifle - .308 / Pump/ 16.5" bbl/ tritium ghost sights / parkerized rifle, similar to the Remington 870 pump shotgun) and I love it.  Had a 10x Bushnell on it and took it off for the Aimpoint.    Much better for its purpose.     Considered a 1.5x ACOG  (I have a couple of TA-11's and EOTech's on my AR's) but for the same reasoning of eye relief that QuietShootr lists, I went with the Aimpoint.  Also used an ARMS mount in case I need quick removal and open sight use.  I am very happy with this setup.

I wouldn't do it until you get to the 4x with BAC.  I hate to give up that quickness without a big gain somewhere else.  Besides, my .308 is a heavy M4, in how I view it.  I didn't want one to give me extended range capability, that's what I have my boltgun for.  I wanted this for hammering people to the ground with a lot more authority than an M4, but for use within the same range envelope.
