I have a 16in M4gery flat top I am about to put an Aimpoint on.  I noticed most pics have the Aimpoint on an offset mount and well forward.  I have never used a Red Dot sight so my question is why above and forward of where you would normally mount a scope?  Any observations or constructive comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

the farther out front it is, the easier it is to see and aquire the dot.

use both eyes open, place red dot on target, engage.

some are on risers to get them up to a comfortable level for the user (personal prefrence) others are co-witnessing the red dot onto the top of the iron sight front post.

If you can mount the Aimpoint far enough forward (just in front of the receiver) you will be able to obscure the front sight post from your left eye (assuming your not south paw) allowing you to keep both eyes open whether the dot is on or not.  Of course you’ll need a RAS or something similar.  Just my preference.

Personal preference.  I like mine over the delta ring and no further forward.  Thats what works for me.

When its further forward, I find it obscures distant targets for me.

Mounting your Aimpoint forward is never a bad idea. Just make sure to get a mount that allows you to co-witness...

+1...I don't like them forward either...for me, it's a law of diminishing returns...the furhter out front it it, the more I am aware of the sight and not the dot.

The simple answer is there is no "right" way; whatever works for you is what you should do.

Directly over the Delta Ring is the sweet spot.

This position offers a good blend of both peripheral vision and field of view.

I think that mounting it forward is a misunderstanding of "high speed" guys,  folks see hs guys with it mounted forward and figure it must be faster on target ect..., when actualy they just mount it forward so they can get night vision behind it.
but I'm no high speed  guy, and I don't know jack.
