Can swapping a handle-mounted optic on and off between shooting sessions really cause your iron sights to lose calibration? I read about this on the MD shooter's site, but given the rugged design of the AR's sights, this just doesn't seem plausable to me.

You better go back and re-read the article on MD-AR15.com

It doesn't say ANYTHING about the iron's losing zero.

It does say that ZEROING the Irons when looking throught a REFLEX - then removing the reflex will shift point of impact - due to lens refraction from the Reflex's curved lens.

It also says if you remove the Reflex (or the Leapers scope - both were tested carry handle mounted optics) they will not retain their zero when reattached (though the Reflex is usually close).

Forest,
You're absolutely right. It was late (4AM) when I read the article - now when I go back and look at it I feel like a jackass. Anyhow, thanks for clarifying, I didn't mean to insinuate the author was wrong, just wondered how the heck that could happen.

No need to feel like a jacka$$ - just pointing out a little more study was in order.
