Well, I read the aimpoint vs EOtech thread, and the checked out some ACOGs, which looked quite nice. However, I checked their site and low and behold...$800!!!! Thats $150 more than my home-built rifle will cost! I am just looking for a small, ACOG sized scope...I really don't understand much about scopes (3.5x35, huh?), but I certainly don't need a big ol' scope on my 6 lb rifle... |

3.5x35 means the scope has 3.5x magnification and the lens on the front of the scope is 35mm in diameter. If you see something like 3-9x40 or 3x9x40 that means the scope is variable in power (zoom) from 3x to 9x and has a 40mm objective. What optic you need depends on what you want to do with it. Tell us what you plan and how much you're willing to spend and you'll get plenty of suggestions. |

I just want a low power scope where I can change the zoom (had no idea 3.5x35 was STUCK at 3.5 magnification). Just some medium-range plinking/home defense/killer zombies :) Don't want anything too expensive but I have no idea how much scopes in general cost, I assume it differs as much as gun prices do. |

Another question..whats your price range? Since the Eotech and Aimpoint both are not magnified so their not what your looking for...I would suggest the IOR 1.1x4x26 or a Leupold or Burris...others will chime in and give you some other options or elaberate on my suggestions. Gonna be a cheapo heretic here, and suggest maybe http://www.riflescopes.com/store/prodinfo.asp?number=7791D 1-5x Simmons, $95 impersonation of a Trijicon or IOR compact that acts like both a 'dot' and mag optic. It will do neither superbly, but can cover all bases with one purchase. I have other Simmons on 2 guns, including a 44mag series scope on my flattop for long range plinking. Decent view, survived a 4ft drop from bench to concrete (can't say that about other cheap scopes). |

Did you "need" an illuminated optic, or are you OK with a standard reticle? I haven't seen anything illuminated in your price range except BSA scopes which, depending on who you talk with, they're either an excellent value for your dollar or a piece of crap. I don't know, because I've never owned one. BUT, if you're good with a non-illuminated optic, check this one out: Bushnell Banner Scope 1-4x 32mm Circle-X Reticle Matte. I can't take credit for it, I got the input from another ARFCOMmer who has one and loves it. It's 1-4, which means from 1x magnification (no magnification like a red-dot) to 4x magnification (4 times real size). Since it's got the "Circle-X" reticle, you MAY be able to use it for multiple aiming points like the HK G36 or Steyr AUG reticle. I'd also suggest going over to Midway USA as you can search by variable scope, power, etc. |

Quoted: Just some medium-range plinking/home defense/killer zombies :) Define medium-range. A lot of guys on here (myself included) feel an Aimpoint is the best choice for arms-length to 150-200 yards. But, an Aimpoint won't give you the precision (Aimpoint has a 4-MOA dot) you'll need if you're trying to kill small game at longer ranges. So, if you want to engage the zombie horde, I vote a non-magnified Aimpoint. The BAC-enabled ACOGs are argued by many to be the best of both worlds: it acts like a dot sight for close encounters but you have the magnification for longer-range shooting and target ID. As you mentioned, these scopes are very expensive. I've tried the ACOGs and am not yet sold on this "best of both worlds" concept. I just seem to work better with the Aimpoint. Aimpoint's aren't exactly cheap either. An ML2 will run you around $350 these days. Then the mounts (like an ARMS 22M68 w/spacer) will cost you another $100-$120. |

Try a Simmons Aetec IF you have a flattop...it's a little big for carry handle mounting. I have one in 3.8x12 (adjustable at anything in between those 2 magnifications). It's around $140, and you can't beat it for the money. If that's too much, Simmons makes some other scopes in the $100 range that will do nicely until you can spend a year's salary on a Leupold later hehehe. If you're building the rifle, please use a flat top receiver...you'll be much happier with the optics options down the road. A perfect setup is a scope for hunting, and a red dot for plinking. By usind ARMS mounts, you can switch one for the other in seconds, with no loss of zero. |
