Why do some scopes have such tall turrets.  I'm specifically looking at the Leupold Mark 4 3-9X40PR, and the turrets are very tall.  I don't think it even has target turrets.

It seems to me that turrets that large would be a liability.

The turrets are taller because of the graduated marks, which gives you the ability to dial up and down according to your dope and range.

The Leupold site does indeed list them as target turrets.  They don't look to be finger adjustable though. Do you unscrew the caps and then dope it with a screwdriver? Or are they  adjusted by screwdriver, and then set for specific conditions with hand knobs, but the hand knobs are not visible on the picture?

Thanks for your help.

It depends on the scope.  On the Mark 4 you're looking at you remove the covers and there's a large, finger adjustable knob.

On other scopes there is no cover, just a large knob that you turn.

I think I'm begining to figure it out.

So you remove the covers and there are the target knobs, but how do you set the initial zero?
