Does anybody have any experience with the Aimpoint Comp XD?  Would it be suitable for use on an AR 15?

I have three Comp M-XD, this is the previous version of the now Aimpoint M2. the M-Xd is also the unit that won the US Army COO competition for deployment on their M16 rifles.  The M-Xd is an excellent optic for use on the M16 series of rifles, it will give up some battery life and a less refined dot, other then some very minor cosmetic changes, the M-Xd and M2 are basically the same unit.  if you can still find one, it will be a quality bargin upgrade for your AR.

Is the M-XD the same as the Aimpoint Competition XD?  The one I am looking at is on sale at Midway and is light blue in color.

No, the Comp-M is not the same as the Competition version.  The M models are all black, have flip up lens covers and have lanyard straps to keep the windage knobs from getting lost.  The non 'L' versions (Comp-M vs. Comp-ML) also have settings that are compatable with night vision.

As to the suitability of the Comp-M on an AR15, the military adopted it as the "M68 Close Combat Optic" and it is in use throughout the military.

The Aimpoint M/ML-XD 3MOA optics are pretty pricey right now (generally seen around $250) but if you have no intention of using night vision equipment the new generation CompML2 is the smarter buy.  The reason why (IMO) is that you're getting all the same quality but with the upgrades of a 4MOA dot, much longer battery life and 2 more visible rheostat settings (compared to the M-XD/M2).  Seems how the XD is around $250 and the ML2 is around $290 I think the extra $40 is well spent.
