This thing is really getting my interest.Somewhere i think I read that the reticle apears to be projected 50 ft or 50 yds in front of you. What is the min + max usable range of these things.
Also i will probably never have(afford)night vision so i was thinking 511,is there any reason to hold out and pay more for the 512.I understand the 512 uses aa batt. and the 511 uses a watch battery or something.I dont know what else is different.

The 511 uses two "N" size batteries and is about 1" shorter than the "AA" versions.

The reticle comes in two versions - 1MOA dot, or 1MOA dot encompassed in a 65MOA circle.  The latter is the most popular.

The EOTech is the BEST CQB sight I have found, and many on here agree.

As far as "projection" goes, it appears the same as any other reddot sight.

Yup! PPD is correct.

I bought an extra N battery and threw it in the buttstock storage.  Save your money and do the same.

I LOVE my Eotech 511. I just got a spare set of batts for it at Wal-Mart for less than $4.

It's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

about the range how would you guys rate this thing at short range, like real short,30ft for examp, and long ranges like 100-200 yds even more..?

This is where the Eotech really shines in my opinion. The 65 moa outer ring makes it great for close combat. Simply put the 65 moa ring on center mass and fire. For long range use the 1 moa center dot.

I've made smiley faces in "shoot and see" targets at 50 yds on rapid fire mode. At 200 yds I had no problem putting rounds right where I wanted them to go.

Hey guys, here's a theoretical question about the eotech sight. Right now I'm using a Trijicon reflex II with the amber triangle reticle. It's a great sight, but as with anything mounted on an AR, when you zero for a 50 yard shot for a typical perimeter position, and then do an entry where you're shooting from 10 feet, you obviously have to aim the reticle about 3" higher than where you want the bullet to strike. It's something you have to think about in a critical situation - not super important if the bad guy is by himself, but a definate consideration if he's got a hostage or cover in front of him and you can't shoot low. Here's the question on the eotech - is it possible to use the vertical "dash" at the top of the 65 moa circle as the zero point for 50 yards, and then possibly the dot in the middle would be pretty close to point of impact for a close up shot?
just a weird idea - I'm definately not an expert on optics. Anybody else thought of this or tried it?

Dogboy,

At first, EOTech focus on the CQB task specified equipment so the laser reticle is projected out about 30 yards, after a test conducted by the Marine Corps, all EOTech are now projected to infinity.  This gives you no margin of error out to 300+ yards.

As far as the model is concern, the last number denotes the power supply, a 1 at the end is the N battery model 9such as 501, 511, or 551) which gives a minimum 70 hours of continuous in the start up brightness setting (setting 12 out of 20) and a end number of 2 denotes the AA battery model (suck as the 512 or the 552), which can go up to 300 hours of continuous use in the same setting.  Please remember this is a very conservative number, I have seen N battery model gone much further then the 70 hours use time.  EOTech also will blink very lightly for the first five seconds at the start up to warn you if the battery is running low, a very useful tool.  I know some Spec op guys are using the 551 with success, many have turn to the 552, but some just like the compactness of the 551.

The difference between the 550 series and the 510 series is the NV compatible capability.  Both of the 550 and the 510 series are LE/military model which comes with a extruded aluminum protective shroud.

I believe the EOTech to be the fastest CQB sight on the market, and the 65 MOA outer circle 3D reticle is the reason.  as far as a long distance shot, I find the fine 1 MOA inner dot to be just fine for that 250 yard shot, you can definitely make a fine aiming point then a 4 moa dot.

SWATDoc,

when you sight in at 50 yards, the range of you zero is about 2.5-3 inches from muzzle to 250 yards, so at 10 ft, you can hit center mass and it will be somewhere between 2-3 inch difference.  just think, 3 inches is about the length of your index finger, it would be the difference of hitting him in the upper chest or the lower chest, no matter what, it is pretty much toasted with a quick three round tap.

Hope this helps.
