I have installed my new ARMS 40 and so far so good.  Someone here suggested replacing the factory 40 aperture with a standard A2.  Said something about getting a better long range sight picture with a standard A2.  Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?

One potential problem I could see with a replacement is the upper half of the long range aperture would rise above the normally flat surface left by the "trimmed" ARMS aperture.  Without having one installed I don't think that it would fall in the line of sight however.

I have also read a little about "Same Plane" apertures such as the XS Sight Systems.  Does this really improve sighting performance or is it a gimmick?

Thanks for the input!

I could not get a good sight picture with the shaved aperture so I replaced mine with the A2.  Yes, the top of the sight when it is folded is no longer flat, but I have not found that this makes a difference.  The ARMS#40 is already too tall for the one 'real' scope I have, but it has no effect whatsoever on red dots or ACOGs.

Can't really speak to the same plane aprerture idea, except I think it is a good one for this application.  The big and small apreture have pretty radically different points of impact, and you no longer the option of using the elevation knob to adjust them.  I'm still playing with the zero to find something satisfactory.  The only drawback I can see to the same plane apretures is that, from what I have read, they are not the same size as the A2 aprerture.  They are bigger.  I like the size of the A2s, and just wish someone would make an apreture that puts them on the same plane without altering the size of the holes.

I replaced all of my A2 rear apertures with Ashley Outdoors (now XS) same plane rear apertures.

That way I dial in a 50/200 BZO the appropriate number of negative clicks (below 6/3, etc.) and the zero remains switching between large and small apertures.  Then dial to whatever yardage you need and the zero should adjust per the numbers.

The only potential negative is that the XS large aperture is slightly larger than the A2's.  I got use to it with not problem, however.

My advice is get a same plane rear ap.

YMMV, however.

Imposter,  Thanks for the first hand experience on the ARMS 40, that tells me more of what I need to know.

Corey,  Are you using the Improved Battlesight Zero from MARS?  Also, are you using a chopped carry handle or equivelant adjustable rear sight?

New thought... does the standard A2 long range aperture raise the POI?  Since I no longer have elevation adjustment with the ARMS 40, would not the standard A2 be better if it does in fact raise the POI for those longer shots?  Just trying to stay on my toes...

This is all true theoretically.  From what I understand, if you zero your big aperture at 50 yards, you will have a nice flat zero.  50/200 zero, within 2.5" of aiming point from 0 to 250 yards.  With the small apreture, you then have 33/300 meter zeroes - the same as the M16A2 on the 8/3 setting.  With the small apreture, you would still be able to make torso shots at 460 meters.

Thats the theory.  In practice, I am not so sure.  I can't really shoot well enough with the big aperture to verify the results.

All of the above.  I'm using it on fixed A2 CH, detachable A2 CH's and a chopped A2 CH.

Yes, I'm using Col. Chuck Santose's IBZ.

I have no experience with flip up BUIS's.

Imposter,

I suppose that I have to decide on my range of use.  Maybe it is time to get the 20" upper and then I can shoot 0 to 600 with the push of a couple of pins.  THAT sounds like a plan.  Thanks again for the input!

BTW, I too need to hone my long range shooting skills to make that 400m+ shot.  At this point it is not an equipment issue... Back to the range.
