While I believe there must be something out there, I haven't found it, so I'm here to ask how long it's safe to leave AR mags loaded without weakening the springs, and whether there's any benefit to under-loading (15-20 rds?), for the sake of saving the springs, or whether the real answer is to just buy some replacement springs and load the crap out of the mags anyway. It would suck mightily to have to load up 30-rd mags in a pinch, but one never knows when the pinch could come, if ever.

I recall reading about this years ago with regard to pistol mags, but don't remember what I read.  When I'm mag-rich with handguns, I rotate magazines.  Same situation here...?

BTW, Wolff has appeared to own the spring market in recent years -- are they the best mfg for AR mags too...?

Thanks.

it's duty cycles that wear out springs.......
springs of decent quality aren't hurt leaving them loaded

This is from spring guys in the business of springs.

I don't even service mags these days.   Trash it and get another one.

Fixing mags ended in '04.   Upgrading followers ended in '09.

As other people have said, a springs compression is weakened by loading and unloading of a magazine. However a fully compressed magazine spring that is subject to stress movement ( I.e in a car, on person movement, etc) on a constant basis and over a long period of time are subject to lose their strength. Fully compressed magazine springs that do not experience such movements do not lose strength over time. So if you keep a mag on you or in a moving vehicle fully loaded day to day and its never used it will lose stength over a long period of time. A fully loaded magazine in your house or safe will not. At lest that's what I have been total by Bill Nye the science guy
