Hey guys, new member here and new to the ar platform. So far I have 10 pmags, a mixture of gen 2 and gen 3. My question to all of you who have done this for awhile or even those who are new like me is what should my magazine rotation look like with only ten? Also what does yours look like if you have more than 10, which I realize is basically everyone else lol

I'm slowly building up my stock. My rifle is used for self defense and punching holes in paper and the obligatory shtf situation. Should I have a couple mags designated only for the defense role and not use those at the range? Tips are appreciated. Thanks in advance!

God Bless.

1.Load Pmags with 30 rounds of ammo
2.Put dust covers on
3.Empty mag at shooting range at least 1x per year
4.????
5.Profit

Pmags are pretty dang near indestructible in my experience, and if the mag does fail, MagPul customer support is pretty dang awesome.
I a gen1 loaded to capacity with cover on for ~14 months, noticed a spit on the spine of the mag about .325" long (still worked 100%).  I called MagPul to let the know about it, they informed me that it happened to about 0.1% to the Gen1 mags, then sent me a Gen2 mag free with a return shipping label for the broke one.

I don't worry too much about my Pmags that stay loaded for verrrrrrry long periods.

edit to add:
I use each and every mag at the range, I would rather find a failure at the range then when SHTF.

yep, it's a non-issue and the springs will outlast your children's children no matter how much you use it.

I have a few dedicated range only mags, all my others stay loaded.

I'm a retired L.E.O. and have had my four duty gen 2 30 round PMAGS loaded with 30 rounds each and two 20 round PMAGS with 20 rounds since 2009.  One 20 round mag sat in the carbine most of it's life.  All the rest have had the dust covers on.  They sat in the trunk of my patrol car for 2 1/2 years in the Florida heat and some cold weather in the winter.  I know, it's not real winter weather unless it gets under 32 degrees.  It feels real cold here with the humidity.

I've used them for my patrol carbine course and qualification while I was still working.  Just checked them and they still look new.  No cracks or separations.

Use them all. If you never use a HD mag and it has some unknown failure I'd rather find it while shooting on the range than when I actually NEED it to work. AR mags are designed to fire thousands of rounds, don't worry about wearing them out at your point in the disease that is the "black rifle"

Yep to all the above. Rotation really isn't necessary.

My wife's grandfather gave me 4 loaded AF contract 20 round magazines in about 2010 (fully loaded w/20 rounds).  He used to own an SP1 when they first came out.  He lost the gun during a move, but still had the mags.   I asked him when he loaded them, and he said it must have been in the mid 70's; he said he always kept the magazines loaded and lost the rifle around 1975.  The headstamp on the ammo was LC 74.  All of the rounds loaded in all 4 mags fired and functioned perfectly.  I have not replaced the springs or followers (they have the metal followers) and the magazines have functioned without issue, even after being loaded with 20 rounds for 35 years.

As has been said on here numerous times, the static load on a magazine spring is not what wears them out.  It is the compression and decompression of the spring that wears it out.

I only use proven mags for HD.

Buy 2 mags a paycheck for a few months and you'll have a good supply of mags so you won't have to worry about them. I "rotate" mags by shooting with them and noting anything funny like failing to lock the bolt back. I need to buy some extra springs and see if that's the problem. If it doesn't solve the problem I will sell them and buy new ones.

I have a bunch of 30 round g.i. mags with 28 rounds, and Pmags with 30 that I loaded in 2010 or 11.

I'm Gonna wait until I'mas old as I can stand it before I shoot 'em.

This.

If they don't work on all the rifles they go to my brother who will try them in his.  If not they are trashed or given away.
